The best kept secret has come to fruition - Singapore | London | Paris | England | Scotland | Ireland | Wales | London | Singapore
Saturday, 15 October 2011
Off to Heathrow on the tube 'all stations', checked in on our Flight to Singapore and then spent the next 12 hours winging our way through the night and closer to home.
Friday, we spent a lovely day in Singapore working desperately at staying awake. We visited Raffles in all it's elegant colonial charm and did a little shopping. I had some foot reflexology and in the evening we visited La Pa Sat Festival Market, for some satay, char kway teo and fried carrot cake (fried small pieces of rice cake - made of rice flour and shredded radish, mixed with a sweet soy) delicious. Satisfied, and exhausted we fell into a long awaited sleep!
Saturday, breakfast in the hotel lounge and an island tour, an effective 'air conditioned' way of seeing Singapore. Back at the hotel, we managed to find time for some curried chicken murtaba (Indian pancake filled, with chicken, onion, eggs - served with a curry sauce) for lunch, and an afternoon of relaxing (quite possibly the first time on this trip), before we head to the airport and home to our families!
We have had such a great adventure, thanks for sharing it with us

Celebratory ice-cream
Our last day in London, spent the morning wandering through Harrods, we visited the food hall and the pet store where there were 5 Chihuahua's for sale each for £2200, and every pet accessory imaginable including a cup cake stall for dogs !
We concluded with the Harrods shop and especially the Christmas shop, it was then that I received the text from Wayne, announcing Fraser as 2012 College Captain! To celebrate we went to the Harrods Ice Cream Parlour, a mere £19 for two ice creams.
Off to the British Museum for the afternoon, and more Egyptian artifacts - as expected the museum houses an extensive collection, left us feeling a little sorry for the Egyptians.
Dinner in the hotel, and then a 'new' episode of Midsomer Murders, into bed for an early start and the tube to Heathrow.
Cheers, M

Photos will some old favourites.....
Lovely stay at the Windsor Trooper. Conveniently, our room which was a converted stables, was located right next to the car park, so it was easy to clean out the absolute junk pit that our little black Golf had become over the 12 days of traveling.
We drove through 4 countries and travelled a total of 3677kms, up hill and down dale - that was quite a ROAD TRIP! and we LOVED it!
We thought we would be too early to hand in the car but the supposed 40 minute trip into London took an hour and a half. That done, it was a two minute walk down the street to the Magnificent Russell Hotel opposite a park. What a luxury! short stop in our lovely room then we walked up to Covent Gardens where we had a spot of lunch then a look around the shops and stalls. We got on the tube and went to 221B Baker Street for a whip though the Sherlock Holmes Museum. Interesting snapshot of a Victorian House. Then it was off to the Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum. That was fantastic we both loved it. Back on the tube. We have come to the conclusion that they keep it unnaturally warm to keep that many people docile. Another great day looking forward to British Museum tomorrow. Maree

Historic drive by
The weather was drizzling and dreary when we awoke in Port Isaac, our host assured us the night before that breakfast would be at 9, by 9.20 and no sign of breakfast we set off, keen to be on our way. Our limited exploration of Port Isaac proved that it was a tiny historic fishing village, and how they can possibly film a tv show there, defies logic. The streets were so narrow most couldn't accommodate a car, let along trucks. Narrowly escaping with our mirrors intact we set of for a 'drive by' of Stonehenge. We did exactly that, setting our sights on arriving in Windsor in time to tour the Castle.
We did and we were rewarded with not only a beautiful castle, but an amazing feat of period restoration, following the fire of 1992(I can't believe it's been nearly 20 years.
Excellent day, tomorrow morning: repack, empty the car, back to London !

Bath and a Pea Souper
Woke up early in our attic room, so we set off for Cardiff Castle. Note to Michelle's Pa and sister Sharon, we went in! There was a 12th century keep in the middle of an enormous walled area. Off to one side was a later building that had been added to over the centuries, finally been practically rebuilt in the mid 18 hundreds in a very ostentatious religious way by the 5th Earl of Bute. No expense spared. Inside there was something we didn't expect. Around the whole property underground but against the wall they built an air raid shelter for World War Two. How's that!
We set off for Bath and the Roman Baths. Well that was amazing. The ingenuity of those people 2000 years ago is unbelievable. Bath the town, is unique in it's architecture all smooth sandstone buildings.
Upon leaving Bath we set the GPS to Port Isaac and it once again led us on a merry dance though the now familiar small skinny roads and back blocks and absolutely spectacular scenery of a place called Chew Valley in Somerset.
Down south through Devon the weather got worse and then the fog rolled in and visibility was poor. My trusty driver got us there though, and as we came over a steep rise there was Port Wenn! I mean Port Isaac which looks exactly like it does on Doc Martin. We are in the attic of a cute little B&B just down the road from Louisa's school.
Good night and Happy Birthday Maddsy, Big Kiss, love you. Mum

Cymru
It was an early start, but after waiting patiently for hot water, a phone call confirmed that the boiler had failed during the night.... Brrrr and grrr
Quick breakfast then down to board the ferry for Wales.
We had a lovely day driving through Wales, located enough ruins and castles to keep Maree happy, then to the hotel for the night, lovely dinner, then off to bed (in the roof of this 13th century hotel)
Cheers M x

Bridge ???
Ask Michelle about her most memorable breakfast on this trip and she will surely answer, Dunraven Arms, portabello mushroom filled with spinach and topped with grilled cheese, served with ham sliced from the bone! I know this to be true because I heard about it for the next fifty miles. We left Adare (fox hunting capital of Ireland), and the beautiful County Clare, where the Rohans came from and headed east to Cahir. There we visited Cahir Castle a small well kept Castle from the Forteenth Century. It seems to be the exception in Ireland because on the whole, there were many more ruins than preserved buildings that we could see. One ruined tower still stood, but it was surrounded be farm shedding can you believe it! We stopped off at Waterford Crystal and perused their fantastic showroom. One purchase. Then we set the GPS for Rosslare. Happily chatting after driving down some very narrow roads, we rounded a curve and came upon a beautiful river view. I have a road map I've been following and I said we must be going to cross over further along and as we went further round the curve we both said at the same time ' um where's the bridge! That's right folks no bridge, a Ferry! the GPS mentioned it when we were about a hundred metres from it. Half an hour and 8 Euro, later we were crossing and then it was straight on to Rosslare Hotel which actually overlooked the harbour where the ferrys dock. After dinner we went for a walk but turned back after 100 metres because of the cold. Off to bed for an early start in the morning. Maree.
